How To Track Your Sleep On Your Apple Watch

Sleep++ promo image.
The Apple Watch can tap you with notifications and other important information, show your messages, you can take a call on the watch, you can track your daily fitness and measure your heart rate, and so much more... But it wasn't really designed to track sleeping. This is mainly for a couple of reasons; 1, you'd have to wear your Apple Watch while you sleep, which might be uncomfortable. And 2, the main reason, at night is when you'll need to charge your Apple Watch so it's ready for the next day.

However, the Apple Watch, with the help of a third party app, is more than capable of tracking you sleep. And since it only takes the Apple Watch two and a half hours to fully charge to 100%, you might be able to charge it at night while you get ready for bed and in the morning while you get ready for work or etc... And since for many users, the Apple Watch's battery is still left with at least a quarter or even third by the end of the night, it won't take the Watch a long time to charge, so you could theoretically wear your Apple Watch while you sleep.

Sleep++ by Cross Forward Consulting, LLC, is an Apple Watch app designed to track and measure your sleep. Sleep++ uses the motion tracking capabilities of the Apple Watch to measure the duration and quality of your sleep.

To track your sleeping with Sleep++ all you have to do is: wear your Apple Watch as you sleep, tell the app that you are going to sleep, and then when you wake up. Sleep++ will measure your movement during the night and then analyze your sleeping data and give you a graph and detailed breakdown, including the duration, how long you were restful, restless, awake, and between what times you got your best sleep.

I went ahead and tried out Sleep++. The app recommends that you put your Apple Watch into Airplane mode to preserve battery. As for effects on battery, out of the couple of times that I used that app, I saw a battery drop on average around 4-6% (with the Apple Watch in Airplane mode). Which is not too bad at all.

I will note a couple of things, first, make sure you give permission on your iPhone for Sleep++ to access your Movement and Fitness data - this is required for the app to work. Second, press 'Start Sleeping' on the Apple Watch app before you activate Airplane mode and then 'Stop Sleeping' after you've switched off Airplane mode, because I found that if I put the Watch into Airplane mode first, the data would never copy over to the app on the iPhone.

Sleep++ promo image.
As for the data Sleep++ collected for me during the night, it was interesting but I'm not sure how useful the data would really be for a continuos use. Sleep++ shows you the duration you were 'asleep' (because you told the app), The total time that your were restful, restless, and between what time you had your 'best sleep'. The graph that accompanies the data, shows you on a timescale, the points where in the night you had 'light sleep', or were restless.

An issue I had with Sleep++ was, while the app supports saving data to HealthKit, even with the setting on, there was no data added to the Health app. So there may be a bug there.

Sleep++ did seem to measure my moment well during the night, however I can't be certain - as I was asleep. And it was interesting data to see - even if I only use the app a few times. If you don't think you're getting a good nights sleep - try the app! You may find that you're quite restless during the night and might need to change things up a little to get a better nights sleep.

Sleep++ is FREE to download for iPhone (and Apple Watch) from the App Store.

Fix Apple Watch Digital Touch Taps & Drawings Not Sending

The one time (in a long time) that I actually used the Digital Touch feature on the Apple Watch to send a few taps and a drawing and the other person didn't receive any of them. Thanks Apple. It can be so frustrating when a feature of a device doesn't work how it should. There does seem to be a simple fix that should work for many - however - what good is that really?! Because you won't know that your device is failing until someone tells you. Anyway, if you have noticed that your Apple Watch Digital taps and drawing haven't seemed to be sending, try this quick fix:

Open the 'Settings' app on your iPhone > then scroll down to and tap 'Messages' > then toggle off 'iMessage' > then switch 'iMessage' back on (after a few seconds). The re-activation of iMessage seems to fix the problem and then may even send all your recent failed digital touch messages through.

How To Manage Notifications On Apple Watch

Notifications on your wrist can be very helpful. It's convenient to get the information you need at just a raise of a wrist. But notifications when set up wrong can be anything but useful - they can be annoying! Which is why it's important to take the time to properly set up the Notification settings for your iPhone and Apple Watch.

The type of useful notifications are the things that give you important time relevant information - like; messages, reminders, calendar alerts, phone calls, possibly fitness alerts (if you are really into that) and maybe some social media alerts - like messaging apps.

To adjust Notification settings for your Apple Watch, you'll need to open the 'Apple Watch' app on your iPhone.

Make sure you are on the 'My Watch' page, then tap 'Notifications'. The Apple Watch is normally set to mirror notifications from your iPhone, but if you let slide a lot of notifications (specially from unimportant third-party apps) on your iPhone - you may want to redefine what you let through to your wrist.

The Notification settings are divided into Apple apps and third-party-apps. Now just simply go through the list of all your apps and decide whether or not you want that apps notifications to alert you on your Apple Watch.

The other important thing to know is - how to mute notifications. For when you don't want distractions - like when you are in a important meeting, at the cinemas, or maybe on a date - you should put your Apple Watch in Do Not Disturb mode.

To activate Do Not Disturb mode, from your watch face, slide up from the bottom of the screen. On the 'Settings' glance pane, tap the Crescent Moon button - this will switch on Do Not Disturb mode. The settings for Do Not Disturb will mirror your iPhone. You can set repeat calls to alert you or your favorites list. To adjust those settings, go to 'Settings > Do Not Disturb' on your iPhone.

Midnight Blue Sport Band on Stainless Steel Apple Watch Review

Apple last month released some new colors to the Sport Band Apple Watch range. One of the new colors is 'Midnight Blue'. This band was first seen by many on director J.J. Abrams at a Star Wars panel.

Now, you can buy the Midnight Blue Sport Band with the new Aluminum Gold Apple Watch Sport, or on its own, separately.

The Midnight Blue Sport Band lives up to its name - it is a dark colored blue, but light enough to distinguish it from the Black Sport Band and it's also appears much lighter in the daylight. Check out the unboxing and review on the video above with the Midnight Blue Sport Band attached to the Stainless Steel Apple Watch.

iOS 9 & watchOS 2 Release Day! How To Update Your iPhone, iPad, & Apple Watch

It's the day of the iOS 9 and watchOS 2 software updates! While it's not confirmed what time Apple will be releasing the updates, judging by previous years, iOS 9 will most likely be available at 10:00am PDT / 1:00pm EST.

iOS 9, the latest operating system for iPhone and iPad, features a new News app (for certain countries), improved Notes app, a new iCloud Drive app, new Siri suggestions and search page, new lower and uppercase Keyboard, ability to add content blockers for Safari, multitasking on iPad, and many, many more improvements to apps and iOS.

*Update: TechCrunch reports that Apple are delaying the release of watchOS 2 due to a "...bug in development...". The update will not be released today, but will "...shortly."

The iOS 9 update can be installed via iTunes or via an over-the-air update - straight on your device: Settings > General > Software Update.

But I do recommend either way before you install the update you BACKUP FIRST! You wouldn't want to lose all your important data like; photos, contacts, messages, and other app data in the event that something goes wrong.

The best way to backup before a big update like this, is in iTunes, but a iCloud backup is also good to have. For more info on backing up iPhone and iPad to iTunes and iCloud, view the Apple Support guides on Backup.

For watchOS 2, the update is done through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone:
Apple Watch (app) > My Watch (tab) > General > Software Update

The Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan update will be available on September 30th.

View more about what's new in iOS 9 and in watchOS 2 on Apple's website.

12 Best Apps For Apple Watch: Essential Apps To Install [Part 2]

Part two of my best essential apps for Apple Watch picks. View Part 1 here.

1Password
By AgileBits Inc.
1Password is a great, if not the best, password manager. It keeps all your passwords secure and protected by one master password. On the Apple Watch, you can select certain logins that you want quick access to.

Hooks - Alerts and Notifications for Everything
By Oleg Kozynenko
If you like notifications, then you should download Hooks! With Hooks you can get alerts sent to you on a wide range of topics that you can customize. For example you can be notified about topics like: Sports, Music concerts, TV Shows, Lottery Numbers, AMBER alerts, Earthquakes, Stocks, Social Media, Weather, and a lot more.

Coyomi - Monthly Calendar
By Flask LLP
Frustrated that you can only see one month in Calendar on the Apple Watch? Coyomi understands and is a calendar for your Apple Watch and Today Widget on your iPhone. There's a heap of colors to choose from, and on Apple Watch you can view up to 12 months.

eBay
By eBay Inc.
eBay on your Apple Watch gives you access to Activity, items you're Watching, Buying, Selling, and your revenue. And of course has Notifications to keep you up-to-date.

By XE.com Inc.
Not everyone probably checks what their money is worth to other countries on a regular (probably even a weekly) basis. But if you're one the people who do or need to, XE Currency has you covered and makes it easy to do so, even on your Apple Watch.

By Shazam Entertainment Ltd.
Shazam, the music identifying app that works like magic, is a bit disappointing at the moment on the Apple Watch, because it actually still listens through your iPhone. But this might change with watchOS 2, which will give more abilities to apps, like access to the microphone. WatchOS 2 is coming sometime this Spring.

If you liked this list, remember to share! And if you have any other Apple Watch app suggestions, let us know in the comments!

12 Best Apps For Apple Watch: Essential Apps To Install [Part 1]

You have an Apple Watch, congrats! Now, what apps should you put on your new smartwatch? The Apple Watch can be very useful for thing like notifications of messages, emails, calls, etc... but what else can be useful - you may be asking... Well, here is my list of the most useful apps for the Apple Watch!

By Twitter, Inc.
Twitter on a small screen like the Apple Watch is not a ideal experience, but you can still view your timeline, mentions, notifications, you can retweet, favorite, and more. If you use Twitter, I still recommend installing the app on the Apple Watch.

By Instagram, Inc.
Instagram is that social network where people share their selfies and pictures of the food they're eating. Okay, looking at photos on a small Apple Watch screen is not a great experience - but you can. You can also like photos and give a quick reply and see your activity feed.

By TLA Systems Ltd.
PCalc Lite is the "powerful choice for scientists, engineers, students, programmers". It also makes a nice Apple Watch calculator. It's simple and easy to use, with a nice layout. It also contains a tip calculator.

By Evernote
Want to take and read notes on your Apple Watch? Oops, Apple didn't make a Notes app for the watch. Never mind! Evernote is a great notes app that syncs through all your devices. On Apple Watch with Evernote you can; dictate notes, read recent notes, dictate searches, set reminders and get notifications.

By XLabz Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
If you're in a city that you're not familiar with, it can be hard to find things that you may be looking for; like a ATM, Bus station, or maybe something like a Cafe or Bar. Find Near Me can help you out by showing you whats nearby.

By Realmac Software
With Clear you can make to-do lists, set reminders, and set tasks. It also makes a great digital shopping list - and checking off the items from your wrist while shopping, is kinda fun.

Have any other suggestions? What Apple Watch apps do you use on a regular basis? Let us know in the comments!

How To Fix A Malfunctioning Apple Watch

Is your Apple Watch experiencing some bugs, or is just not seeming to function quite right? The Apple Watch is still a new product, and it's likely that it may experience some software glitches occasionally. All computers seem too.

With a malfunctioning Apple Watch, your best bet is to switch it off and back on again with what's known as a Hard Reset. Note: this is not the same as restoring your Apple Watch.

To Hard Reset your Apple Watch:

- Hold down the Digital Crown Button and the Second Button together, until the watch powers off and the Apple logo appears on screen.

If this doesn't fix the problem you were experiencing, you may need to try and Restore your Apple Watch (see here for more details). If this fails as well, maybe it's time to visit the Apple Geniuses.
