uHear - Test Your Hearing On A iPhone - App Review

We all know there is an app for just about everything, and I thought, one thing I haven't tried yet on an iPhone is a hearing test. Now I think my hearing is pretty good, so I wanted to put it to the test! So I searched the App Store and found this app called uHear from Unitron Hearing Limited.

According to Unitron, hearing loss just doesn't affect the elderly - it can affect anyone. And "There are more than six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly one and a half million are school age."

uHear - Hearing Sensitivity Graph.
uHear tests you in three categories:

- Hearing Sensitivity: A six minute test. uHear will play sounds and test your left and right ear in different frequencies. All you need to do is tap the screen every time you hear the sound.
When done you're presented with a graph showing your results, and a short worded summery and some general information.

- Speech In Noise: 1 minute. This test plays a clip of someone giving a speech and then asks you to turn up the background noise to the highest point where you can still hear and understand the speech. This test will give you your acceptable noise level score and tell you if your results where in the normal range or not.

- Questionnaire: Just some question - 12 to be exact. The questions are about hearing in everyday situations. Results tell if you might be experiencing some hearing difficulty in your daily life.

uHear - iPhone app
All your results are saved in the Results section. You can name the results, so you can test multiple people and compare later.

Learn, features some helpful information with tips, facts, and hearing myths answered.

And Locate can help find you some hearing professionals.

Now of course this should not be taken as a serious medical examination, and if you think you need (or should) take a hearing test - seek a hearing heath care professional.

There was some app crashes, but none thankfully during the listening tests.

uHear was fun to use, and you know it's even more fun testing your family and friends and comparing your results!

Take the uHear hearing test. It's free and available for iOS (designed for iPhone and iPod Touch). Other information and a demonstration video can be found on the Unitron website.

Sonic Dash (Now Free) - iPhone, iPad - App Review

Sonic the Hedgehog returns in his first ever endless running game - Sonic Dash (By SEGA).

Similar to other 'running' games, like Temple Run, Sonic runs endlessly collecting items, in this case, gold rings, while picking up power-ups and dodging obstacles.

Playable characters are only Sonic at first - you must either save up your Red Star Rings or buy more to be able to purchase players: Tails, Knuckles and Amy.

The graphics are good, very vibrant colors.

The camera movements can sometimes 'get in the way' and trap you in a unavoidable end.

Background music is very Sonic like.

At times Sonic Dash can take a looong time to load! Usually on start up. Also iPhone 4, iPad 2 and up are only supported. Also had experienced some crashes on an iPhone 5 in the middle of gameplay.

Not a fan of the control system. To move left or right, you need to slide to each side and Sonic moves - there's no tilting device option to get smoother movements. To duck, slide down and jump, slide up.

After every run before you can restart, you're presented with 'Hints', which include in-app purchase offers. Gets a little annoying.

And my only other complaint would be, you're always running the same part from the start over and over - which gets repetitive.

On the positive side, it's Sonic! He runs - fast! Goes into ball mode and destroys enemies.

There are also the Daily Challenges where you can win prizes like Red Star Rings or other players. I think the challenge is collecting puzzle pieces in normal game play - not very fun.

I don't like this runner better than say, Temple Run/2, but it's an okay Sonic game. I just think it  should use the iOS devices abilities better - like the accelerometer.

Sonic Dash is now free, and available for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Kids Easter Themed Apps - Easter Rush - App Review

Continuing my Easter themed app reviews is Easter Rush By iLogos inc.

The Easter bunny is tipping the eggs off a bridge ...for some reason, and it's up to you to catch them in the basket below.

All you need to do is move the basket from left to right and collect the eggs while avoiding other falling items.

There is 80 playable levels in 4 different themed stages.

Could be great fun for kids.  On the downside: Unfortunately Easter Rush crashed a lot for me, especially on start-up. And the app does have a bit of a loading lag.

Easter Rush is available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, free to try, full game costs $0.99 through a in-app purchase. There are also advertisements in the app - not sure if these go away if you purchase the full game.

Kids Easter Coloring Book for iPad, iPhone - Easter Bunny Eggs ColoringBook FREE

Awesome coloring right? Okay maybe not, it's hard to color perfectly on a iPhone or iPad and when you color it in just about a minute.

Easter Bunny Eggs ColoringBook FREE By TickTap, gives you pretty much what the title says, a Easter themed digital coloring book.

Great for kids, it keeps the coloring in the book and not on the walls and furniture.

Coloring on a iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone isn't that easy, it's hard to be really precise and the resulting coloring can't be put up on a fridge, so it obviously lacks the real elements of coloring.

But anyway for a digital coloring book, there are a range of different colors.  Three categories of images; Easter Bunny, Spring Time, Easter Eggs.

Share image via email or you can save the colored images to the devices Photo album, however the saved image isn't a high resolution.

There are advertisements that appear in the app - something to keep in mind if you're not coloring with your kid.

It's not the most graphical or well designed app, but it works and is a free solution.

Easter Bunny Eggs ColoringBook FREE is available and designed for both iPhone and iPad.

Kids Easter Egg Coloring Book! - iPad, iPhone - App Review

If you saw my last review of a Easter coloring book, you're probably thinking my coloring got a lot better. Well not quite.

With Easter Egg Coloring Book!By Peep Software, you can cheat by using the Bucket Mode tool to fill in areas making coloring on a iDevice a lot easier! You can also still use the paint brush tool and finger paint your picture if you prefer.

Easter Egg Coloring Book! Features 21 images to color, with 60 colors to choose from, will keep the kids entertained for a while.

Great tools to choose from: Paint Brush to finger paint, Bucket Mode to fill areas, Zoom to paint those small areas, and a eraser to clear a mistake.

The images aren't very high quality unfortunately. Which you can tell when you zoom in. They seem to be made for the size of your screen.

There are also ads on screen and that pop up - removing them will cost $0.99.

You can save your coloring to the in-built gallery, then save them to your device and share them.

Easter Egg Coloring Book! is free for a limited time and is designed and available for both iPad and iPhone.

Cheats for Icon Pop Brand Free! - All Answers - iPhone, iPad App

AppVenturous, LLC is back with another wining cheat game based on another developers work. This time it's Cheats for Icon Pop Brand Free!

Cheats for Icon Pop Brand Free!
Icon Pop Brand, an app I reviewed recently, is a guessing game that uses cartoon icons of brands and products.

Icon Pop Brand of course offers there own ways to help out in-game and even has the ability to ask friends for help. But that doesn't stop heaps of websites popping up and people asking for answers all over the internet and even apps being built with the answers right there.

I understand that these games can get frustrating when you get stuck on a level, but in my opinion, using an app like Cheats for Icon Pop Brand Free! which just places them out in order, in a gallery view and throws a bunch of ads all over the screen, really is just plain cheating.

Cheats for Icon Pop Brand Free! is available for iOS.

Icon Pop Brand - Guess The Answers From Symbolic Icons of Brands, Products, Companies and More - iOS, Android

Icon Pop Brand by Alegrium, challenges you to figure out the answers from special handcrafted icons that represent topics ranging from brands, products, companies, and organizations.

You may already be familiar with the game Icon Pop Quiz, and this one is very similar to it, but Icon Pop Brand, features the icons of more brand related content.

Icon Pop Brand features hundreds of icons divided into 5 levels, with a least a 6th coming soon.

After choosing a level you'll see a grid of icons,  press on an icon and use the keyboard to guess the answer. You'll earn tokens which you can use to buy help.

When you're struck on a icon and can't figure out the answer, you can use your tokens for some help. You can get a "Hint", remove incorrect letters with "Eliminate Keys", "Open Letters" to help get the right word, and if your friends are smart, you can "Ask a Friend" on Twitter or Facebook, or just "Reveal" the answer with tokens.

Great guessing game to test your brand and product knowledge. Answers don't need to be 100% accurate, but close enough.  On the downside, the app doesn't use the native iOS keyboard, but this one works fine.

There is quite a few advertisements, but if they annoy you, they can be removed for $1.99.

Other than the frustration that comes with not being able to figure out the icons, Icon Pop Brand is fun and addicting.

Icon Pop - Trailer:

Icon Pop Brand is available for free on the iOS App Store and Android's Google Play Store.

Best YouTube Alternative App: Jasmine - iPhone, iPad - App Review

If your not happy with Google's YouTube app and you're looking for an alternative client, look no further than the iOS app - Jasmine by Morrissey Exchange Pty Ltd.

Jasmine, has a light 'day' and dark 'night' themes, which can be easily changed by tapping the logo on the top.

You have all the features you'd need to browse YouTube like; search, browse, your favorites, playlists, subscriptions and recently played.

In Search, just simply type whatever your looking for - only downside there's no search suggestions as you're typing.

Browse features sub-categories from YouTube like; Featured, Trending, Top Rated, Most Viewed and so on...

Subscriptions, brings up all the channels you follow and access to a stream of all the latest videos. I feel like the latest videos should be featured a little better, it's only takes two presses from the home screen, but still think they should be more front and center. They are after-all the news feed of YouTube.

To view videos press right on the image or press on the title to take you to the videos detail page, where you can see; the description, comments, related videos, the channel the videos from, you can add to favorites and rate, like or dislike and also share the video to playlists or via social media like Email, Twitter and Facebook.

In Settings, you have control over brightness, text size, preferred video quality: set to play up to Full-HD (1080p) quality videos or to stick to more standard quality streams, with options for both Wi-Fi and cellular.

Upgrading to Jasmine PRO for $1.99 gives you Parental Controls and helps support the developer and keeps Jasmine advertisement free.

Jasmine, works great and fast, almost always quicker than Google's YouTube app. Jasmine features a clean nice design. And best feature of all, I haven't seen any YouTube advertisements in the videos!

Highly recommended YouTube alternative app. I've tried a lot of the others, but none are as good as Jasmine.

Jasmine is free! A iOS universal app, available and designed for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Cheats for Icomania Free - All Answers - iPhone, iPad App

Whenever there is a popular guessing game, there is popular cheat websites and now even apps.

And an app that I bet the creators of Icomania will probably not be happy about is:

Cheats For Icomania. Made by AppVenturous, LLC this app features all the answers to the games images.

All 220 levels are revealed in the app.

The images are sorted by level number and then displayed in a image gallery style.

While great for those stuck on answers, these type of apps should be removed from the App Store.

How To Set Up Apple ID Two-Step Verification

Apple has implemented Two-Step Verification to better protect your Apple ID and your devices.

Two-Step Verification works by requiring you to link at least one of your devices. Then if you try to login to your Apple account from a new device, Apple will send to your verified device a four digit code to enter. Making it nearly impossible for hackers to access your account.

To set up Two-Step Verification, go to:

appleid.apple.com,
- Select "Manage your Apple ID".
- Select "Password and Security."
- Enter your security questions.
- Then under Two-Step Verification select "Get Started".

- You will then select a device to be verified.
- Apple will send that device a four digit code.
- You can then also set up a device via SMS.

Apple will then also give you a Recovery Key. This key must be kept in a safe place as it can be used if you forget your password or lose your device.

Two-Step Verification replaces your security questions. And it's important to note that, you'll always need at least two of the following to manage your Apple ID; your password, your trusted device or your Recovery Key. So if you loose one, you'll need the other two to access your account.

Google Takes On Evernote With New Notes Service - Google Keep

Google announced on March 21st 2013 a new service to Google Drive, entitled Google Keep.

Google Keep which you can access through drive.google.com/keep/ or via the new Android Google Keep app (and soon directly via Google Drive), lets you save whatever's on your mind.

With Google Keep you can:

- Write notes.

- Create Checklists.
- Add Photos.
- Add Homescreen widgets for quick access.
- Color-code your notes.
- Data is synced across all Google devices.

No word on a iPhone (iOS) app, but you could access the notes through the web and I'd guess that Google will at some point add this feature to the Google Drive app.

Take a look at the Google Keep video below.

Access Google Keep via:
drive.google.com/keep/ or the Google Keep Android app.

Apple just yesterday released the iOS 6.1.3 update that fixed a security flaw that allowed a Passcode bypass which gave access to the Phone app. Well it seems another Passcode bug has been discovered.

This new security flaw allows access to the Phone app and Photos. The flaw involves using the Voice Dial command and ejecting the SIM card.

There is a easy fix for this bug if you are concerned - just simply disable Voice Dial.

How To Make An App Wish List / Get App Price Alerts

If you've got some apps that you want to buy but maybe they're a bit expensive and you'd rather wait until they go on sale or become free - create a app wish list!

The best app that could do this was AppShopper, but that got removed from the App Store. There is still a website you can use - but hey, we're talking about apps, not websites!

If you really want to be able to share your wish list, then try out AppShopper. Otherwise the next best option in my opinion is to use app discover tool, Appsfire.

Appsfire is available for iOS and Android devices. It's free and is a great way to discover apps. It has many sorting options and app lists available.

In Appsfire you can create price alerts, which is kind of the same idea as a wish list, without the sharing feature. Appsfire will send you push notifications whenever the price of your selected apps change.

To set up price alerts in Appsfire all you need to do is:

- Search for the app you want the price alerts for.

- Then click on the bell icon next to the price.

You can view all your price alerts in the My Apps section. Remember, when asked, to allow push notifications to Appsfire or this can't work.

Get Appsfire for: iOS [App Store] or Android [Google Play]

Free Handwriting Calculator App - MyScript Calculator

MyScript Calculator (By Vision Objects) is not a ordinary calculator, there is no number buttons on this one, MyScript Calculator lets you use your own handwriting.

MyScript Calculator can solve any arithmetic formula. Simply write you equation and the app will identify your handwriting and solve the problem.

Using your own handwriting feels more natural on a touch screen device. It can be faster and easier to write equations than on a calculator.

If you pause for a second the app can be a little quick to solve the equation.  And it you're using a small screen like an iPhone, you may not be able to write long equations.

MyScript Calculator is FREE, works on iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) and Android devices.

Icomania is filled with cartoon icons. Ranging from TV, to Movies, Famous People, Cities, Countries, Brands, Logos and so on.

If you've played the popular 4 Pics 1 Word you'll be familiar with the interface and style of game play.

You have the image and topic as your clues. The amount of letters in the word and jumbled letters at the bottom to make up the answer from.

For when you get stuck, there's a option to ask your Facebook friends, and helpers that can remove some of the jumbled letters or give you a letter in the word. There's a limited amount of uses for these at start, but you can purchase more.

Just like 4 Pics', Icomania is fun, easy for anyone to just pick up and play. Features a great clean, easy to use interface, and great looking cartoon icons. The game can be challenging, fun and frustrating if you don't know the answer.

Exercise your brain and download Icomania. Highly recommended for some great thinking fun.

Cool Fonts iOS App - Write in Different Fonts On Your iPhone & iPad

Cool Fonts By Alejandro Portela allows you to write in and use different fonts on your iOS devices.

There are 26 different fonts currently available. 16 Free to use and the rest you can either buy for $0.99 each or buy the whole Pro pack for $2.99.

Cool Fonts doesn't add new keyboards of font styles to your keyboard.  You have to write in the app, then copy the text and paste it wherever you want to share it.

Cool Fonts will work pretty much anywhere you can type text like; Email, Facebook, Twitter, iMessage and Instagram.

The fonts themselves are okay. I don't think they're that cool - most of them are annoying, spammy and some don't look even readable. Honestly, I'd delete or remove anyone using these fonts in comments.  They need to add some better more standard legible fonts in my opinion.

Available for: iOS (designed for iPhone)

Price: Free

If you share a iOS device with someone else, you may not want them seeing what you've been searching for on the web - because you know, maybe you were buying them a Christmas present and don't want to ruin the surprise or you don't want to stay logged-in to a web page ...or something like that.

There is a way built-in to iOS to keep your browsing history cleared.

Just to make clear - this does not hide your browsing history from your internet service provider, or hide you on the page you visit. This will just make your device not keep a history.

Private Browsing mode in Safari is controlled in the Settings app. Unfortunately there's no quick way to switch it on or off, or have say one tab open normally and one in private.  Also switching to Private Browsing Mode will close any open tabs.

To activate Private Browsing mode in Safari on either iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your Home Screen.
    • Scroll down and press Safari.
      • On the page will be Private Browsing. Switch it to 'On'.

On this page is also other settings you may want to change like your default search engine, auto fill options, and whether or not to open new links in a new page or in the background.

It's easy to tell when Safari is in Private Browsing mode as the interface will appear in a cool dark theme. (like the image above).

Is 'Google Now' Coming to iPhone and iPad?

Android users running operating system Jelly Bean will be already familiar with Google Now, and now the Siri like program on steroids may be coming to iOS users soon as well.

Google Now is the app that can seem creepy because it will end up knowing everything about you. From your planned days events to where you are and where you're heading and even personal details like a favorite sports team. But without making it sound creepy, Google Now basically acts like an assistant that's always thinking one step ahead and providing you with information when you need it.

Sounds kinda cool right? Well Engadget was tipped off about a YouTube video (which has now been removed) that is supposedly a Google advertisement showing off the new Google Now feature built in to the already existing iOS Google Search App.

Click here to watch the video on the Engadget article.

Of course this video could be fake, but still this makes the dreams of iOS users who want to be able to use Google Now just that little bit closer to reality.

To get a better idea of what Google Now can do, below is the Google Now video for Android.

What's the Pic? - Guess The Word Under 100 Little Squares

There's a lot of image / word guessing apps out there now and the latest popular app to rocket up the iTunes charts is What's the Pic? ~ guess the word hiding under one hundred little squares! (By Cheat Master And Friends Words Cheats LLC)

Like the title suggests the way this word guessing game works is by giving you a picture that is covered by one hundred little squares. You can remove some of the little squares (number changes as you progress) - choose wisely! After removing the squares - use the jumbled letters below and the part of the image to guess the answer.

There are 200 levels available to play.

You have "Lifelines" available to use. By using coins you can buy a letter or remove a letter. Free option - you can ask a friend via Email, Message or Twitter.

The app also has a store where you can buy coins to use your "lifelines".

Different to other popular word guessing games - with this one you at least only have to decipher one image.

One thing I don't like about What's The Pic? is it will eventually ask you to rate the app 5 stars in the app store for in return 500 coins. To me this seems wrong and like their buying their ratings.
Not that this is a bad app or anything, but morally it feels like cheating. How about just say, hey please rate us anything, tells us what you think, what you'd maybe like to see added and in return here's 500 bonus coins.

As a word guessing game - with the simple premises of reveal part of the image and guess the word - the game is good. It can be easy and it can be challenging at times. I also like that there isn't ads all over the game -- actually I don't recall even seeing one ad.

If you love these image / word games - get this one and add it to your collection.

What's the Pic? is FREE, available for iOS and has been designed for both iPhone and iPad.

How to Back Up Photos from iPhone to Computer On Windows [iOS Tip]

You may have thousands of photos and videos on your iPhone or iPad and that may be the only place you have them stored.

But what if something happens to your device? What if you didn't use Apple's Photostream or even backup to iCloud or iTunes? Then you've really lost all your pictures and memories.

Backing up your data is always a good idea - the more copies the better. Even better if you have three copies of each stored in at least 3 different places (Eg: Computer, Cloud storage and physical media like a DVD disc.)

If you're not backing up your pictures and videos to your computer, it's a good idea to start doing so. Most computer savvy people will know how to do this - in case you don't know how here's the instructions to copy your data from your iPhone on a Windows computer:

And in case you didn't understand all that from the image, here's the instructions:

      - First connect your device to your computer.

      - Open Computer application.

      - You should see your device under Portable Devices. Open it up.

      - Then will be Internal Storage, open this too.

      - Then a folder called DCIM.

      - In the DCIM folder will be other folders with random number / letter names. In these folders will be your photos and videos.

      - You can now open up each of these folders and copy your data to a location on your computer.

Harlem Shake It! - Record Your Own Harlem Shake - App For iPhone

Free for a limited time, Harlem Shake It! (By Robert Paul Neagu) will help you record your own Harlem Shake videos.

'The Harlem Shake' is a meme that originated on January 30th, 2013 by a video posted to YouTube by vlogger Filthy Frank with music by heavy bass artist Baauer. The meme became popular after five Australian teenagers made several of their own 'Harlem Shake' videos which went viral soon after.

Harlem Shake It! will guide you through the process of making your own video.

It's got the music ready - SD and HD quality options.

First record the 15 second intro or you can import a clip from Camera Roll (really handy!).

Then the app will stop and take you to the 'Record Wild Part' for 15 seconds screen. You can here as well import a clip from Camera Roll.

After recording, Harlem Shake It! will compile the video, it'll automatically save to Camera Roll (make sure you allow the app permission) - you can preview your video and then upload to YouTube and share to Facebook, Twitter and Email.

It's so simple and easy to use and works well - it's now only up to you to be creative and get a wild partyin' crowd.

      Price: $0.99 (U.S.)

Now Free: The Colbert Report's The Word App For iPhone and iPad

Catch up with The Colbert Report's: The Word with its own app (by Comedy Central) available for iPhone and a version available for iPad.

The Word is a segment from television show, The Colbert Report - staring Stephen Colbert.

The app features every 'The Word' to date. You can view the segments by date, 'word', or at random.

The Word app has gone free as of March 6th 2013. It's regular price was from $1.99 for the iPhone, to $2.99 for the iPad version.

The app itself hasn't been updated since March of 2012, so the iPhone version is not iPhone 5 widescreen.

The video isn't widescreen either and the video and sound quality isn't that great.

      There's a slight responsive lag.

And sometimes the video and controls don't even show up on screen!

It does however feature airplay, even though the quality isn't good enough for a TV.

It's disappointing, for Comedy Central and The Colbert Report to put out a app of such crappy quality. Sadly, even though the show is awesome and funny as - the app is not worth downloading - definitely not worth paying for. So I'd say download it now while it's free and hope for a update one day - but I think this may be more of an app going out of business sale.
