Opera Browser Adds Free VPN Service

The Opera Browser has added a free VPN (virtual private network) service, built directly into their web browser.

Currently available on the Opera Developer Build, the VPN service provided by SurfEasy Inc. creates an encrypted tunnel from the users computer directly to the VPN server at the switch of a button. 

A VPN service is also used to shield a users real IP address allowing them to bypass firewalls, enhance privacy on public Wi-Fi, and access blocked content. Eg: region blocked content. 

Opera's free VPN can currently change your IP address's location to mimic either Canada, Germany, or the United States. 

How to Enable Free VPN Service in Opera Browser (Developer Build): 

1. Download and install the Opera Browser Developer Build. Then open the browser, if it doesn't automatically open. 

2. Click "Opera Developer" in the Mac Menu bar, and then click "Preferences."

3. Under the VPN heading, check on "Enable VPN". 

4. Now open a new tab and navigate to a website.     

5. In the address bar, click the VPN button, then switch it to on. Then select the country you wish to mimic the geo-location of.

Best Ad-blocking Extension for Google Chrome or Firefox

Ads are annoying. Everyone hates them and for good reason. A lot of websites mistreat ads, they place them everywhere, they are intrusive, and often flashing, and telling you that you've won a price that you really haven't. And ads can even contain malware! There has been many cases where adware (or worse) has snuck into advertisement, even on major websites.  

Many people know of AdBlock Plus, but there's another great extension that may be even better!

View Your Mac's Performance Data in Notification Center

MONIT by Tildeslash is a FREE app in the Mac App Store that all Mac users should install - it's awesome.

What MONIT provides is a widget for Notification Center that shows you performance data about your Mac in a nice design - filled with heaps of infomation.

In the widget, you can see info for your Mac's; CPU, Memory, Disk, Battery, and Network. By clicking on a topic you can then drill down into even more stats and details about your system.

In CPU; you can view; CPU usage percentages in user, sys, and idle and more...

Memory; gives you stats about how much is wired, active, compressed and free. You can also view physical memory, memory used, and more...

Disk; provides you with quick access to hard-drive stats, and how much is used and free.

Battery; view stats about how much time you have remaining on current charge. You can view your Mac's batteries Health percentage and the condition, age, cycle count, temperature, voltage, amperage, and capacity.

In Network; you can view your Mac's and Internet's download and upload speeds, IP address, Wi-Fi name, and total uploaded and downloaded figures.

Pocket Weather AU for iOS Gets Disappointing Redesign Plus Apple Watch App

Pocket Weather Australia by ShiftyJelly PTY LTD has long been a favorite weather app for Australians. It was just recently updated with a totally new redesign, along with the new much anticipated Apple Watch app. But wait! Users who haven't updated yet, may not want to hit that button too quickly. This update has left some users not too happy with the change and for what I think is good reasons. 

If you use Pocket Weather Australia, you'll know the app for its great design and more accurate weather information (than the stock iOS app) - right down to your local suburb. The app was designed for both iPhone and iPad, and used the real-estate advantages. The same can't be said for all of its previous positives in this latest update.

Gone is the great graphical weather images for a very minimal design, with a lot of white space and very basic weather icons. The new design also feels less intuitive - even with its very simple Google looking card system. Like tapping the today section card will open more in-depth information, however there is no indicator of this feature. There are also inconsistencies that don't make a lot of sense - like rounded up/down weather temperatures and showing the 'correct value' in different areas. I also experienced crashes and freezing while performing simple actions like adding a city or trying to load the weather.

The iPad app is also a let down compared to its previous version. Before the iPad made use of the larger display, however now, it's basically the same exact iPhone app on a larger plain background. It's clear that this redesigned version has taken design cues from Google, over Apple. 

On thing that many people were waiting for was a Apple Watch app to replace the  usually incorrect iOS weather app. But this app has its let downs too. While there is a complication you can add to the Watch face, it will not show the current live temperature - instead it'll show the days max and condition. Tapping the complication will take you to the Pocket Weather Australia Apple Watch app. 

The Watch app shows some more useful information for when you're on the go, like; current temperature, the day's predicted high and low, and the weeks temperature overview. Missing info that would be useful is; the Feels Like temperature, hourly/upcoming rain info, ability to switch through different cities/towns and a reload button for when the app fails to refresh, which in my experience, happens -  there has definitely been some updating issues. 

While it's still the same great app that pulls weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology, maybe with a few issues or bugs, this version feels a lot like a step backwards. Honestly, a hybrid of the before and after, I think, would look a lot better. Bring back the old weather graphics for the header, keep the simple new interface maybe with some adjustments and make better use of the iPad's larger screen size. 

Pocket Weather Australia is priced at AU$2.99 in the App Store. The new redesign and Apple Watch app update is free for existing users.

Video Downloader Pro is a great app with a bunch of useful features. The app has a built in web browser and can download videos from major streaming video sites (like YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, ect...) Although be aware that unless you're downloading your own videos - it's against the policy/terms of use of many online streaming sites to download videos. Use the app with your own discretion.

The app also says it'll work on any; streaming video sites,  file sharing sites, sites with downloads, and cloud storage sites. With the ability of up to 10 simultaneous downloads.  Resuming of interrupted downloads, and downloads in background.

Video Downloader Pro also acts as a download manager. You can watch the files download, and then view all in a dedicated tab.

You can play videos, make playlists, send it out to a TV, open in another supported app, export to your devices Camera Roll, or email.

There are also the settings to transfer files to your computer via Wi-Fi. Set a pin lock on the app to keep out prying eyes. And some browser / player customization options.

The only things I can find to complain about is - You can't select video quality stream (unless the option is on the site) it's really whatever is playing. So unless the site streams the file, say in HD, you'll save whatever it streams.

How To Check Your Heart Rate On An iPhone or Android Phone - Instant Heart Rate

A lot of new technology has gone health related. There are FitBits, FuelBands, A Gear Fit, and Samsung has even put a hearth rate sensor onto their latest phone. Well I've been able to check my heart rate on a iPhone for years, thanks to a pretty cool app called - Instant Heart Rate - Heart Rate Monitor by Azumio Inc.

This heart rate monitor was even featured on the Dr. OZ show. It's simple to use, and seems fairly accurate. The app uses your iPhone's camera and camera light, to see into your finger to monitor the blood flow.

Instant Heart Rate - Heart Rate Monitor, also features a Real-time PPG graph, a Continuos or Auto-Stop mode. Heart Rate zones, and real-time global map. Pulse waveform graphs. Trends (or Graphs) that can show you information you've gathered by checking and tagging your heart rates. Registered users can also export their data. You can share to social networks.

All that comes in the app after purchase. Their is an optional additional in-app purchase for a 'StandUp test' which is for fatigue and fitness testing.   

If you're into checking your heart rate, this would have to be the current best heart rate app for iPhone's. It'll work great on any iPhone that has a camera and camera light. (so iPhone 4 and up). It is also compatible with any iPhone running on at least iOS 5.

How To Set Up & Use Password Manager - LastPass (via TWIT)

If you take your online security seriously, which you should! You'll want very good passwords protecting your internet information.  Re-using passwords from site to site, is not a good idea because if one password is compromised, all your logins are compromised.  Also if you are using passwords like 123456 or password, you're also unsafe.

But how do you remember all these different passwords... Not by writing them down on paper! The best way is to use a good, secure password manager.

There are two great password managers I'd recommend. 1Password, and LastPass. They both work across multiple platforms.  You can find more information about 1Password here. And LastPass on their website.

I wanted to share this video to you all from TWiT.TV. It's a special with tech expert Leo Laporte, who shows you how to download and set up LastPass.  It's a must watch, and it's a great introduction to the password manager and all it's great features.   

Narwhal - A New Awesome App For Reddit - iPhone

Narwhal for Reddit By Rick Harrison is a new client application for the popular social sharing website Reddit.

Narwhal features a iOS 7 inspired design, using a color palette similar to the official Reddit colors. The interface is clean looking and well thought out. 

You can access; front page, new, hot, rising and controversial, from a pull down menu. From the site 'hamburger' (three line) menu, you can access all the other sub-reddits, find users, and edit preferences. You can also easily share Reddit posts to social networks. 

If you don't have a Reddit account, this app is free. But by upgrading the app to the paid version (for $1.99), you can sign in using your Reddit account, and access features; messages, add new posts, comment, subscribe to sub-reddits, vote on posts with simple swipe gestures, save/hide posts using gestures... 

Narwhal is a nice new promising app for Reddit. If there is a feature you think is missing, there is apparently more features to come in future updates.

Narwhal for Reddit is FREE to download, contains an in-app purchase for a 'pro version' ($1.99). The app is designed for iPhone, and can be downloaded from the App Store. 

Password Protect Images / Files, Access Cloud Accounts, & More, with All-in-one App 'Files United' For iPhone & iPad

Files United by Zuhanden GmbH, is a all-in-one file manager. With two apps, available from the iTunes App Store and Mac App Store, for iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) and Mac computers.

Files United lets you access local files stored in the app, your Dropbox account, or Drive, or Box.com, SugarSync,and/or, SkyDrive. All from the one app.

Files United also makes it easy to transfers files to and from a computer with their companion Mac app. The app can also access; FTP servers, WiFi Connect or SMB (Windows/Mac/NAS).

You can also view your files from within the app, with their inbuilt document viewer and media player.

You can protect your files with a PIN or password. So whether you want to protect photos or confidential documents from prying eyes, Files United will keep them secured.  

The U.I. (user interface) of Files United is based on the iOS 7 look and feel. It really matches well with the stock iOS 7 apps.

Files United can support many different types of files, including; Microsoft Office documents, PDF files, JPG's and other types of images, Music and Video files, Websites, and even Zip Files.

As for functionality, if you were to use Files United to store images in one of the folders, the images viewer is not the smoothest. Swiping through images, pinch and zooming, is a little rough and sharp. Not like the default images viewer on iOS. There were sometimes that images also went to black when swiped onto them. Also there is no gallery 'thumbnail' view, you will have to do with only a list of files.

Viewing PDF files seemed to work file. It was a smooth, good experience. You can also print from the app, or open the file into other apps that support the file, installed on your iDevice.

Videos and other media files also seem to work okay.

Importing files from your iOS device's Photo's folder, takes a few steps that a little unexplanatory. You need to go to the Image Gallery, then open edit, select files, and then press the copy button (which is the two overlapping squares), then choose the folder you want to store the file(s), and tap 'Copy here'. A few steps that you may not 'get' straight away.

To transfer files to the app from your Mac, you will need the companion app for Mac OS X. You can't use iTunes File Sharing, as it gives you a permissions error. You could work around this using Cloud apps however.

All-in-all, Files United is a useful file manager. It gives you the access you need to all your cloud storages, all from one app. It can store files, like photos, videos and documents, locally, with password or PIN protection. The UI makes the app look apart of iOS 7. And it's Mac companion app helps making transferring files from Computer to iOS, even easier. If you hate having to switch between a bunch of different apps to view all your files, check out Files United.

An iPhone App That Reminds You To Go To Bed

Sometimes we may get out of our sleeping schedule, or like to stay up a little late, and then feel so tired the next day because we only got a few hours of sleep. Well unless you're a kid, your mom might not be telling you to go to bed anymore. If you need a little help (or a reminder) that instead of being awake watching Letterman, you probably should be asleep, check out the iPhone app, To Bed by Tord Asnes.

To Bed, is a FREE iPhone app that'll remind you to go to sleep. To Bed uses information about your age, and next-morning wake-up times, to determine the best times for you to go to sleep. You get a push notification when you should start getting ready for bed.

Depending on your age, To Bed, recommends around about 7-8 hours of sleep, which seems to be scientifically accurate. You can change the recommend sleep time in the settings, to your own liking.

The look of the app is really... a guess 'fun', or childlike, is a more accurate description. The picture above shows the apps main screen. You'll see the moon, the remaining time until you should head to bed, and the button which looks like a nose to me, is your option button.

From the option button, you can access; Turn Notifications On/Off, Wake Times, & App Settings. On of the main things I don't like about this app is, you can't set sleep reminders for weekends. The app just assumes that everybody can sleep in on weekends. Well unless your five... and even then, kids have weekend activities.

Other than the missing weekend settings and a few graphical glitches in settings, To Bed, is a good app, if you need that little extra push to remind yourself to go to bed.

To Bed is FREE to download, and is available for iOS devices (designed for iPhone). 

Best Unit Converter for iPhone & iPad Gets New iOS 7 Theme Update

A unit converter is a very useful tool. You never know when you might need to know what a temperature in Fahrenheit, is in Celsius. Or what Kilograms is in pounds. Or even currency differences.

The only inbuilt unit converter on a iOS device is Siri. Which works great, but there are some times when you might not be able to speak out loud... So a unit converter app is still a great addition to any iPhone or iPad.  

My favorite unit converter, the one which I think is the best, fastest, and easiest to use is Convert Any Unit - Units & Currency Converter & Calculator By Cider Software LLC, which today was updated to feature a iOS 7 style theme - look and feel.

The new look has kept the same style as the previous version, but flatten it all out, removing the glossy look that went with iOS 6.

How To Track & Find Out Who Unfollowed You On Twitter Using An iOS App!

It's hard to get people to follow you on Twitter, unless you're a celebrity like Justin Bieber... One popular method is the 'follow back' system. Simply, you follow back everyone who follows you, or everyone who says they'll follow you back. But then after you are following hundreds of Twitter accounts, it's hard to find out when someone unfollows you, and therefore has got a 'free' follower.

But of course there's a app for that! Actually quite a few... and a lot of web services as well. Most of these "Track Your Twitter Unfollowers" services a really spammy, and will force you to tweet, (or will do so on their own), their spam advertisements.

The app I'll mention today that Tracks who follows you and has unfollowed, will allow you to see the info you want, without all the spam. Now, that doesn't mean this app doesn't alert you with with annoying popups asking you to tweet - but you can easily click, "No".

How to see who's not following me back on Twitter?

The basic free version lets you see all this information, although you may have to scroll through your following / follower list and check that the labels all right "mutual". Otherwise there is a Pro version of Find Unfollowers and in-app purchases for other premium features.

But if all you want is to see who has recently followed or unfollowed you - the free version will do fine.

Also note - this app won't work for accounts with over 70,000 followers / following.

Minimal designed interfaces seem to be the most popular these days, and the T-Zero Countdown Timer, gives you just that. The information you want, with as less clutter as possible.

T-Zero Countdown Timer allows you to add events and see it countdown in real time, exactly how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds are left.

The app is simplistic, has sharing to Twitter and Facebook and supports iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices.

Downsides to the app are: you are limited to 10 entries, and there is no event alert.

There also may be a few bugs, like one I found, where if you try to delete a entry it says the wrong title and then disables the edit, share and settings buttons until you close the app from running in the background.

T-Zero Countdown Timer isn't perfect, but is the most simple countdown app, that just displays the information you need.

Ever seen one of these images before? Maybe you saw it was on a poster of a flyer... It's called a QR Code, the abbreviation of 'Quick Response Code'. In this post I'll show you how you can make one and how to scan them by using your iPhone!

QR Codes look like these squares with a lot black little squares inside. They are similar to bar codes.  They were originally designed for industrial uses, but became popular with consumer advertising.

By using your smartphone's camera, the user can scan the code with a special QR Code reading app, and it'll open up the web browser to the certain website, store or whatever the QR Code links to.

You can make QR Codes that contain information for a lot of different things including:
A website URL, a YouTube video, Facebook page, Twitter page, Dropbox, Email address / message, Contact details, Skype call, Wi-Fi login (Android only), Telephone number and so on...

'Google Now' Now Available For iOS

The Google Search app has been updated to version 3.0.  The update includes Google Now.

Blogger App For iOS and Android - App Review

Sometimes you need to blog on the go, and you might not have a laptop with you, and since it's 2013, you shouldn't need one. With devices like iPad's, some of us don't even need big computers anymore.

If you're using Google's Blogger service, Blogger does have an iOS app available. And I thought the ultimate test would be to review the app by writing the review on the app!

On the Blogger app Home Screen, you have:
- Your blog and ability to switch between, if you have multiple.
- Posts,
- New Post,
- View Blog,
- and Settings.

In Posts, you can: Edit, View, Share, and Delete.

New Post: you can obviously write your post. Then add labels, pictures and location data. You can publish from the app or save it as a draft for later.

View blog, is exactly that - view your website.

And there's not much going on in Bloggers Settings: If you have multiple blogs you can switch between them. Set sort posts order by, 'Last Update Date', or 'Created Date'. And you can choose a default setting for images.

Okay, so that's what you can do, what about what can't you do on the Blogger app? A lot. For example, there's no stats data, no Page / post view data. You can't place an image where you'd like. Can't access Pages. No direct access to comments. No rich text options. No layout options. And a lot more...

To sum up, Blogger's app won't be a replacement for a computer. Unless you try using Blogger through Safari or some other web browser on a iPad or tablet.

The Blogger app is okay if all you want to do is write a quick post and add an image or write a draft to edit later when you're at your computer.

Blogger (app) is free and is available for iOS and Android devices.
